ADG has worked with the Abbot at St. Gregory’s Abbey in Shawnee on a master plan and conceptual design for a modern monastery that will accommodate the traditional, contemplative setting essential to monastic life. The plan calls for 40,000 square feet of additional building area adjacent to the existing abbey church, which was originally constructed in 1942. The design for the new structure would fit the context of the existing brick and cast stone structures on the campus of St. Gregory’s Abbey and the neighboring St. Gregory’s University.
The monastic apartments each include private baths, and break from traditional monastic design. Assisted living apartments will allow monks to stay within the cloister even when infirmed temporarily or requiring assistance due to age. The location of the new monastery recognizes the proper relationship between the monks, the Church and the world beyond the cloister.
