The Dean McGee Eye Institute flanks a prominent gateway on the southeast edge of the University of Oklahoma Medical Center. ADG, Inc. won a design competition for a new 78,500-square-foot expansion which has recently been completed on the north of the 1960s-era medical facility.
A four-story metallic-clad atrium is oriented towards the prominent corner and act s as the central reception area for the entire building. The lobby at the atrium’s interior is protected from the western sun by a floating sunshade—a distinctive feature of the design. A black brick wall forms the north face of the building and screens a new parking structure from the street. The clinical and research floors of the new building are enclosed with a curving glass wall.
The design specifically accommodates the special requirements of minor surgical rooms, laser facilities, examination of children, clinical trials facilities and visual rehabilitation space.
